Reading, PA – Reading police released the name of the officer who investigators believe fatally shot a man on Saturday, July 17, 2010, as reported by Reading Eagle. The shooting took place after police received reports of a robbery.

Officer James Kennedy fired the shot that killed Tyron L. Stevenson, 2, of Reading, according to reports from Chief William M. Heim. Kennedy has worked on the force for over a year.

Kennedy is currently on administrative leave pending the internal investigation.

On Saturday, at approximately 2:30 a.m., reports of a gunpoint robbery on the 600 block of Moss Street reached police.

When officers arrived, a witness identified Stevenson as one of the participants in the robbery.

Stevenson ran when officers approached him, thus beginning a police chase. When Kennedy apprehended Stevenson, the two began to fight, according to reports.

During the fight, Stevenson fired a shot at Kennedy but missed. Kennedy retaliated with a shot that struck and killed the man.

Kennedy suffered only minor injuries from the incident.

An autopsy was performed on Stevenson in Reading Hospital on Sunday, July 18. Results have not been released as of yet.
