Irvington, NJ – At least nine firefighters suffered injuries Tuesday, July 27, 2010, after battling a three-alarm blaze that destroyed an abandoned house and threatened to extend to adjacent buildings, as reported by The Star-Ledger.

According to Deputy Fire Chief Brian Muehe, the fire erupted at approximately 6 p.m. at 1050 Grove Street. The fire inside the two and one-half story wood-frame building required the services of the Irvington fire department, as well as aid from at least three other municipalities, including Maplewood and East Orange.

A Maplewood firefighter suffered burns and was transported to St. Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston. A second was taken to University Hospital in Newark for a back injury. Two other firefighters were taken to Beth Israel Medical Center in Newark for injuries that were not disclosed, according to Muehe.

Several firefighters were treated for heat exhaustion at the scene.

Irvington fire officials are heading the investigation. They are still trying to determine the cause of the fire that burned the building to the ground.

Two other buildings sustained minor damage.

As of Wednesday, July 28, the fire was not labeled as suspicious.
