Staten Island, NY – A Staten Island man was awarded $500,000 by a federal judge Tuesday, July 27, 2010, for allegedly suffering jaw injuries from a ferry crash in 2003 that inhibited his social life and stopped him from dating, as reported by Staten Island Live.
The side of the Andrew J. Barberi ferry was torn apart after the October 15, 2003 crash. The accident killed 11 people and left many injured.
Michael Grynberg, 40, testified during a bench trial in April that his engagement ended as a result of the Staten Island ferry crash. He also claimed he stopped dating two years ago because he is now forced to eat pureed and liquefied food due to jaw pain resultant from the crash.
Judge Frederic Block wrote in his decision, “These changes in eating habits have produced other significant changes. Grynberg avoids social activities like dating at least in part because they involve eating.”
Judge Block threw out most of Grynberg’s other claims, which included depression, posttraumatic stress disorder, brain damage and lost wages as results of the incident.
Grynberg has filed five lawsuits since 1991, reporting injuries from accidents and job discrimination at Brooklyn College, according to the Daily News.
