New York, NY – A city police officer turned himself in Tuesday, July 20, 2010, on charges related to a hit-and-run accident that occurred on June 14, as reported by The New York Times and NY1.com. The officer is accused of hitting a bicyclist with his car and driving off without reporting it.
According to authorities, Officer Louis Ramos was driving his vehicle, with flashing lights and blaring siren, the wrong way down Jay Street in Brooklyn on the afternoon of June 14. He drove through a red light and struck the cyclist at Sands Street.
Ramos and his partner Paris Anderson got out of their police cruiser, dragged the cyclist to the curb, handed him a tissue and then drove away. The never called an ambulance or reported the accident, according to Brooklyn District Attorney Charles J. Hynes.
Surveillance cameras captured the incident.
The cyclist suffered cuts and bruises to his face and a fractured wrist.
In addition to the charges of assault and reckless driving, Ramos is charged with leaving the scene of an accident where there had been an injury.
Even with video footage capturing him at the scene, Ramos pleaded not guilty.
Ramos and Officer Anderson were suspended without pay last month.
