Burlington, VT – A nanny facing charges of molesting a 10-year-old boy during a family outing in June 2009 reached a plea deal Monday, July 19, 2010, just before his trial was due to begin, as reported by the Bennington Banner.

Donald Shepherd pleaded guilty to aggravated sexual assault, lewd and lascivious conduct and use of a child in a sexual performance on Monday.

He was charged in 2009 with molesting the boy at a state park in Grand Isle County.

He faced 18 counts of using a child in a sexual performance and six counts of possession of child pornography before reaching the deal. As part of the plea deal, the child pornography charges were dropped.

According to reports from WCAX, the Grand isle County Prosecutor explained to the press, “We’re going to do whatever we can to show how serious we take this. Someone who can contemplate and understand that this is what is likely to happen may think twice before they do such a thing. We’re going to take care of our kids.”

Shepherd’s defense attorney withheld comment.

Sentencing is expected next month. He faces up to 25 years in prison.

Furthermore, investigators reported he may have victimized other children in other states.
