Waterbury, VT—Rome Snowboards Co., in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Health Canada (HC), issued a product safety recall of snowboard boot bindings. The snowboard boot bindings were recalled due to the potential fall hazard they may pose. The CPSC announced the voluntary recall on Wednesday, May 12, 2010.

Approximately 2,900 snowboard boot bindings were affected by the recall in the U.S. Another 220 were subject to the product safety recall in Canada.

The recall was prompted by a hazard in which the snowboard bindings’ base plates may rupture at cold temperatures. This issue could subsequently cause snowboarders to fall and potentially suffer injuries.

While no injuries have been reported in connection with the defect, Waterbury, Vermont-based Rome Snowboards allegedly received 14 reports of base plates breaking.

According to the CPSC, “This recall involves the Rome Snowboards Co. 2010 United snowboard bindings. The bindings come in black and red color themes and in sizes small, medium and large. Rome is printed on the highback. The bindings also have graphics on the back of the highback and on the rear portion of the baseplate.”

Snow sports retailers sold the snowboard boot bindings from September 2009 through December 2009. The China-manufactured bindings were valued at around $160.

Consumers have been urged to cease use of the snowboard boot bindings and contact Rome Snowboards to receive complementary replacement bindings.

Rome Snowboards may be contacted at (866) 289-9990 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. ET or on the company’s website.
