Hoffman Estates, IL—Claire’s Boutiques Inc., in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), has issued a recall of approximately 19,000 “Best Friends” Charm Bracelet Sets. The CPSC announced the product safety recall on Monday, May 10, 2010 due to excessive levels of cadmium.

High levels of cadmium prompted Claire’s to recall the “Best Friends” charm bracelets. If children manage to ingest the cadmium, it could cause them to suffer potentially serious health effects. No injuries or adverse incident have been reported in connection with the recall as of yet.

According to the CPSC, “The “Best Friends” three bracelet sets are silver-colored chains with metal pendants containing one of the words “Best,” “Friends” or “Forever” and heart lock and key charms with different colored stones.”

Dae Yeon Industries Corp., of China manufactured the charm bracelets to be sold in Claire’s stores nationwide. The noxious charm bracelets were sold from February 2009 to January 2010 for approximately $12.

Consumers have been urged to confiscate the charm bracelets from children and return them to Claire’s for a full reimbursement or replacement product. For more information regarding the defective product recall, Claire’s can be reached toll-free at (866) 859-9281 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. ET. Consumers may also contract the company on its Web site at www.Claires.com.

According to the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR), breathing in high levels of cadmium can cause serious lung damage. Consuming cadmium can cause stomach irritations, which generally tend to cause vomiting and diarrhea. Even in lower levels, long-term exposure to cadmium will lead to a “buildup of cadmium in the kidneys and possible kidney disease”. The Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) also ascertained cadmium to be a known human carcinogen.
