Product liability alert: C&T/Sorelle recalls cribs due to faulty hardware

Washington, DC – On Thursday, May 6, 2010, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), in cooperation with C&T International/ Sorelle of East Rutherford, NJ, announced a nationwide recall of C&T Drop-Side Cribs.

The cribs pose hazards resultant of the cribs’ hardware. The drop-side hardware can disengage from the tracks, causing the side to separate from the crib. If the drop-side partially detaches, it creates a space between the crib mattress and the side. Infants and toddlers can potentially become entrapped in the space, which could lead to strangulation and/or suffocation. If the drop-side of the crib detaches completely, children risk falling from the crib. Also, slats can detach from the sides of cribs, posing entrapment, strangulation or fall risks for children.

The CPSC and C&T/Sorelle received 104 reports of incidents related to drop-side and slat detachment. Six babies suffered bruises and abrasions to the head, face, torso or leg from becoming entrapped or falling. Five babies who were entrapped or fell were found by their parents uninjured.

The recall consists of C&T International, Sorelle and Golden Baby wood cribs. The cribs were full size and sold in natural, white and cherry finishes. Model numbers and names were printed on labels affixed to the footboard or headboard under the Caution statement.

The cribs were manufactured in Italy, Latvia, Brazil, China and Vietnam and were sold at children’s product stores from January 2000 to March 2010. They retailed between $300 and $600.

The CPSC suggests for parents and caregivers to immediately cease use of the cribs. Consumers are told to contact C&T/Sorelle to receive a free replacement kit. If the firm is unable to supply a replacement kit, it will provide consumers with a $100 voucher towards the purchase of another C&T product. It will be unable to provide replacement kits for four older models – the Hampton, Jackie, Nina and Rita.

C&T/Sorelle can be contacted at (877) 791-9398 between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. ET Monday through Friday. The firm’s Web site is www.candtinternational.net.
