Washington, DC product defect – Pre-school magnetic toys by MEGA brands recalled

Legal news for product liability attorneys – MEGA Brands has issued a recall for Magtastik and Magnetix toys, aspiration and intestinal hazards.

MEGA brands recalls toys for pre-schoolers.

Washington, DC (www.NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – Mega Brands, in coordination with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) http://cpsc.gov, issued a voluntary recall of Magtastik and Magnetix Jr. Pre-school Magnetic Toys on Wednesday, March 17, 2010, as reported from the U.S. CPSC. These toys pose aspiration and intestinal hazards if ingested.

The distributor, MEGA Brands America Inc., of Livingston, NJ, issued the recall for approximately 1.1 million units. The toys were manufactured in China.

The hazard in the products arises when the magnets found in the small, flexible parts of the animals, vehicles and building sets detach. If the small pieces do detach from the product, the children using the product may swallow or inhale them. If more than one magnet is swallowed, the magnets can attract each other and cause intestinal perforations or blockages, which could prove fatal.

MEGA Brands and the CPSC have received 19 reports of magnets coming loose, including one report of a three-year-old child receiving medical treatment to remove a magnet from his nasal cavity and another report of an 18-month-old boy with a magnet in his mouth.

These toys include small flexible parts embedded with magnets that allow the parts to connect to large, colored metal balls.  They were sold at Wal-Mart, Target, Toys R Us, K-Mart and other toy stores nationwide from January 2005 through December 2007 and ranged in price between $10 and $40.

Consumers are recommended to stop using the recalled toys immediately and return them to the manufacturer, MEGA brands, for a free replacement toy. Any questions should be directed to MEGA brands at (800) 799-7122 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. ET, Monday through Friday. Information can also be found at the company’s website, www.megabrands.com.
