Legal news for New York personal injury attorneys – Feds uncovered evidence of Toyota’s cover up of company records and personal injury cases.
New York, NY (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – A government congressional council has uncovered proof that Toyota Corporation has consistently and deliberately withheld company records from many personal injury cases brought against them since the massive vehicle recalls, announced the New York Times.
The Boards chairman revealed that Toyota’s engineering information known as the “Books of Knowledge” were kept from the courtroom in the settlement of multiple personal injury cases that have arisen. This information was discovered when a paper trail of Toyota’s apparent misconduct of defending itself in personal injury trials, had to be subpoenaed from the former Toyota lawyer.
Toyota’s credibility is also in question about whether they withheld relevant and significant information from government officials, such as U.S auto safety regulators. Toyota issued a statement in response to the chairman’s letter in defense of its legal conduct which stated, “It is not uncommon … for companies to object to certain demands for documents made in litigation.”
However, these withheld documents “indicate a systematic disregard for the law and routine violation of court discovery orders in litigation,” written in the letter to Toyota Motor Corps North American Chief Yoshimi Inaba.
In each personal injury lawsuit, Toyota’s top executives were under oath claiming that they were in full cooperation with the investigations into their vehicles safety matters, which led to the global recall of 8.5 million vehicles.
Toyota released in a statement that “We are confident that we have acted appropriately with respect to product liability litigation and our discovery practices and look forward to addressing Chairman Towns’ concerns.” The investigation continues.
