FDA alert: Brooklyn company recalls crushed red pepper due to health risk

Brooklyn, NY (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) www.fda.gov announced that Wholesome Spice of Brooklyn, New York has recalled 25-pound boxes of Crushed Red Pepper that was sold between April 2009 and January 2010.

The boxes of spices were recalled due to potential contamination of Salmonella, which can cause serious and potentially fatal illness in young children, the elderly and those with weak immune systems. Symptoms of Salmonella poisoning are often fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain.

The 25-pound boxes of red crushed peppers were sold in the northeast to manufacturers. It was not sold to directly to consumers. The crushed peppers were sold in a translucent plastic bag inside a cardboard box with a white label that read in black letters WHOLESOME SPICES. The product listing is CRUSHED RED PEPPER. Neither the company nor the FDA have received any complaints of illness in relation to this recalled product. The product was tested in samples, which led to the discovery of the Salmonella contamination.

Those who have purchased the crushed peppers are advised to discontinue use of the product. Manufacturers who have purchased any of the 25 lb boxes of WHOLESOME SPICES brand Crushed Red Pepper are advised to discontinue use. The firm continues to work with the FDA to determine how the crushed peppers became contaminated.
