Pasco County, FL (News)—A motor vehicle collision (MVC) involving a deputy’s vehicle and another car left the police officer, the inmate he was transporting, and another motorist injured. The two-vehicle crash occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, February 23, 2010, according to information provided by TampaBay.com.

Officials from the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) allegedly reported that the 33-year-old deputy, Joseph Schlotter, was traveling east on State Route 54 while en route to Land O’Lakes jail to drop off an inmate that was apprehended for possession of a controlled substance, when his vehicle was struck by another turning vehicle. The other car involved, driven by 19-year-old Zackary Barrington, was allegedly traveling westbound on the roadway when he attempted to make a left turn as the police car was passing, consequently colliding with it. The initial crash reportedly sent the officer’s vehicle careening off the roadway where it came to a rest on its side in a retention pond.

The inmate in the police car, identified as 27-year-old Charles Robert Williams, suffered serious injuries, including a possible traumatic brain injury (TBI) in the incident. Emergency medical services (EMS) crews transported Williams to St. Joseph’s Hospital to be treated by doctors and nurses. Schlotter was also apparently taken to the hospital to be treated for minor leg wounds. Barrington was treated for his minor injuries by responding medical professionals at the scene. No citations have been issued in connection with the crash. FHP officials are investigating.
