UPDATE: Daniele Inc. salami tests positive for salmonella

Legal news for Rhode Island product liability attorneys – Daniele Inc. pepper-coated salami found to be contaminated.

Providence, RI (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – The Rhode Island-based Italian sausage company’s product pepper-coated salami was found to be contaminated with salmonella, which is associated with a recent outbreak, reported Thursday, January 28, 2010, according to CNN.

Daniele Inc. was under investigation by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) www.fda.gov for possible contamination that was traced back to multiple people across the country who became ill after consuming pepper-coated salami. The tests showed that the pepper used to prepare the meat had traces of salmonella bacterium. In a more recent investigation, the Center for Disease control (CDC) www.cdc.gov and the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA) www.usda.gov have been working with the FDA to determine the potential sources that have made at least 189 people ill in 40 states across the nation since last July. Public officials suspect that the strain of salmonella causing the outbreak is Salmonella Montevideo infections found through running tests on those who had fallen ill.

The FDA announced a nationwide recall of 1.2 million pounds of 18 products of Daniele Italian deli salami, which were recalled by the USDA and the manufacturer. Daniele Inc. recently announced that they are changing their spice supplies to avoid future contamination.

“The company’s goal right now is to take prudent, proactive measures to do everything possible to remove any products that do not meet our high standards for quality and taste,” the company said in a statement. Salmonella is a potentially life-threatening bacterium that causes diarrhea, fever and stomach cramps if consumed.
