1.2M pounds of salami recalled due to salmonella outbreak

Legal news for Rhode Island product liability attorneys –A Rhode Island company recalled their salami as precautionary measures due to a salmonella outbreak.

Burrillville, RI (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – Daniele International recalled 1.24 millions pounds of pepper-coated salami due to an investigation of a salmonella outbreak, on Saturday, January 25, 2010, according to the Washington Post.

The Rhode Island-based company product was investigated for months, while officials tired to trace people who became ill in multiple states back to peppered-salami.

A senior epidemiologist at the public health division in the state of Oregon determined that the source of the salmonella outbreak was Daniele International. There were eight cases of people becoming ill from consuming the salami. The investigation showed that 184 people in 38 states also fell ill from salmonella due to consuming the product since July 2009. In Washington State, there were a reported 14 sick residents, who had gone shopping at a retail warehouse called Costco. Officials looked over their previous shopping lists, which led to the discovery that all of the consumers had purchased salami.

There were 11 reported sick people who had also eaten salami at Daniele Italian Brand Gourmet, however, federal investigators and Rhode Island officials have not made the direct correlation between the company’s products and the nationwide outbreak. The Department of Health in Washington is aware of the situation. It was reported that two of Daniele International’s plants were tested for the lethal bacteria and were found to be bacteria-free. The company is taking precautionary measures and taking strides to eliminate any products that may be contaminated with the potentially life-threatening food borne illness.
