Douglas County, GA—A motor vehicle collision (MVC) involving an ambulance and a car tragically killed a paramedic and left three others injured, reports 11Alive.com, an NBC News affiliate. The incident allegedly occurred early Monday morning, December 28, 2009.

According to witnesses at the scene of the wreck, a car in front of an ambulance that it was trying to pass on Anneewakee Road would not move over, even though the emergency vehicle had its lights flashing and sirens blaring. The car then turned into the oncoming ambulance as the ambulance was trying to pass the vehicle, which allegedly caused the ambulance to flip over and roll several times. The law requires drivers to yield the right of way to a passing emergency vehicle with its lights and sirens on.

Emergency medical services (EMS) teams responded to the scene to transport the injured to be treated by doctors and nurses. Paul Holmes, one of the paramedics in the overturned ambulance, was pronounced dead after being transported to Grady Memorial Hospital for the serious injuries he acquired in the crash. Another paramedic, Daniel Young, was thrown from the ambulance when it flipped, and had to be airlifted to Grady Memorial Hospital but is reportedly recovering at home. The ambulance driver was treated for the minor injuries he sustained at Grady Memorial Hospital as well. The driver of the car also involved in the collision was taken to Wellstar Douglas Hospital after suffering from serious post automobile accident injuries.

The Georgia State Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
