Motorcycle Accident: Erie County sheriff struck by car

Orchard Park, NY (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – A motorcycle crash injured an Erie County Sheriff’s deputy when he was struck by a moving vehicle in Orchard Park on Sunday, November, 2009, according to WGRZ.

Police reported that the accident took place on Big Tree Road where 47-year-old Sheriff Michael R. Summers was in the process of an official police escort near California Road, when he was struck by another vehicle.

Emergency medical services (EMS) arrived at the scene where 22-year-old Craig Kowalski, the driver of the car that struck the officer, had attempted to make a left hand turn into a private driveway. Kowalski turned directly in front of the officer on his motorcycle.

Paramedics loaded Deputy Summers into an ambulance which transported him to Erie County Medical Center, where he was treated for trauma to one of his legs and a shoulder wound. His condition was reportedly stable.

Police reported that Kowalski and his passenger remained unharmed. Kowalski faces charges for unsafe lane changes. He has been given a court date for Orchard Park Town Court for the charge. The accident continues to be investigated by Erie County Sheriff’s Accident team.
