Los Angeles, CA—A fiery crash between a sport utility vehicle (SUV) and a lettuce-carrying semi-truck tragically ended the lives of three people. The SUV slammed into the rear-end of the big rig on Sunday morning, November 22, 2009 around 5:00 a.m., on the 210 Freeway in Sunland, as reported by the Los Angeles Times.

The SUV was reportedly headed westbound on the 210 Freeway when the vehicle rear-ended the semi-truck at unknown speeds. The tractor-trailer was parked along the highway when the collision occurred. The California Highway Patrol stated there were no skid marks leading to the scene of the crash. The vehicles erupted into a blazing inferno, which trapped three people inside the SUV. A 14-year-old boy,a 41-year-old male, and a 40-year-old female, were tragically killed when they were unable to escape the fiery trap. Two people managed to escape from the wreckage, a 9-year-old girl, and an 11-year-old boy.

The two children were transported by Los Angeles Fire Department to the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles and were in fair condition. The male driver of the semi-truck complained of chest pain. He was transported to the Providence Holy Cross Medical Center in Mission Hills for treatment. The blazing wreckage managed to ignite a small brush fire that took 29 minutes to extinguish with 61 firefighters. Police officials are conducting a full investigation into the fatal wreck.
