Safford, AZ—Five people were injured when a semi-truck slammed into a rest stop caretaker’s residence, which also left the truck driver dead. The tractor-trailer crashed into the home on Wednesday, November 18, 2009, around 12:15 p.m., on Interstate 10 about 70 miles west of Phoenix, as reported by Eastern Arizona Courier.

A May Trucking semi-truck was reportedly traveling westbound on I-10 when the big rig for unknown reasons veered across the eastbound lanes, and slammed through a backyard wall and hit the Burnt Wells Rest Stop’s caretaker’s home. Five people happened to be in the backyard when the truck came crashing in, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety. Carlos Gonzales, 53, Sharon Gonzales, 42, and Nicholas Gonzales, 12, all from Safford were injured in the collision and taken to Phoenix area hospitals by emergency medical services (EMS) teams. Carlos and Nicholas sustained injuries due to the flying debris; they were treated and released from the hospital. Sharon was admitted to the hospital for treatment her non-life threatening injuries. Adolfo Sedillo, 70, of Avondale was airlifted by EMS crews to Good Samaritan Hospital for treatment of his serious injuries. A fifth person, Jamie Beltran, 36, of Phoenix took herself to St. Joseph’s Hospital where she was treated and released. The driver of the 18-wheeler, Edward A. French, 45, of Long Beach, California, was pronounced dead at the scene by responding medical teams. Police officials are reportedly investigating the fatal crash. It is currently unknown what caused the driver to leave the roadway.
