Ontario County, NY (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – The Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) www.osha.gov was notified of a worker who was extricated from a trench after being trapped for nearly an hour before firefighters arrived to rescue him out, on Monday October 26, 2009 announced the Rochester Democrat and Chronicle.
Firefighters and medical officials reported to the scene of the trapped worker. By the time officials arrived around noon to Hillcrest Driver, in Canandaigua, the worker had been buried in dirt up to his chest cavity for an hour.
The worker had been installing a new heating and cooling system for a new house that morning. All of the sudden, dirt cascaded down from the walls inside the trench and covered the helpless worker with dirt just below his neck and shoulders.
EMS transported the worker via helicopter after rescue officials lifted him from the trenches after 90 minutes of digging to Strong Memorial Hospital. Ontario Sheriff Deputies identified the worker as Cory Rogers, resident of Bristol.
Cory was working with another employee of GeoCorp in the trenches at the time of the incident. The fellow employee escaped without injury when his fellow worker became trapped. The other worker rushed to a residents home to call for a rescue crew, while the other workers on the scene attempted to help Cory out of the rumble and dirt until he was only up to his waist in dirt.
Cory stated that he had chest pain. He was treated at the hospital. Officials were not certain what caused the dirt to fall around him.
