Product Liability Notice: Coby Electronics recalled due to fire hazard

Legal news for Product Liability attorneys – Coby Electronics recalled rechargeable batteries due to fire hazard.

Washington, D.C. (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) — The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, in cooperation with Coby Electronics Corp. announced a recall of the following electronic products due to a fire hazard. All people who have purchased the products listed below are advised to discontinue use immediately.

The product was called rechargeable batteries sold with portable DVD/CD/MP3 players and was sold and distributed nationwide at many discount, electronic, music, toys and office supply store. There have been 19,600 of these defective products sold in the U.S.

The voluntary recall is to protect the consumer from the threat of a potential fire due to the defective batteries. The batteries have reportedly over-heated according to 10 reports filed with the CPSC. There were eight reports of fire damages. There have not been any injuries reported as of yet.

The importer, Coby Electronics Corporation is based out of Lake Success, New York. Colby Electronics imports the products the products in question from China, where they were manufactured. The products that are involved in this voluntary recall are described as Coby DVD/CD/MP3 players with an 8 ½ screen with a skew number of TF-DVD-8501.

The rechargeable batteries have a sticker that says “Coby” on the front of the cover and the bottom of the product. The rechargeable batteries are marked with serial numbers that start with “HY”, which can be found on a white sticker attached to the battery. In addition, “Coby” is imprinted on the front cover of the product, and the product number is located on the bottom if the product.

The defective products were sold from January 2007 to September 2009 for a price of $140 and $275. People who currently own this product are advised to remove the batteries from any product immediately and contact Coby Electronics for a new battery for no charge. The DVD/CD/MP3 players with AC or DC power adapters are still permitted for use.
