Maryland boy Killed by Amtrak train going 100 mph

Cecil County, MD (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) – A young boy was struck and killed by a passenger train on Sunday, October 11, 2009, announced CNN.com.

Maryland State police officials reported, a 13-year-old boy was apparently walking with some friends along the railroad tracks when the crash occurred. The Amtrak commuter reportedly hit the boy while he was trying to cross the tracks. Local residents, family members, and emergency workers searched for the boy for close to a half an hour until they found him.

Cecil County emergency medical services (EMS) rushed to the scene of the fatal accident, where he was declared dead. The boy was then identified as Shawn Luther Kelly. The Amtrak commuter train was transporting passengers from Boston to Washington at the time of the fatal incident. The Amtrak train heading south was traveling at speeds exceeding 100 mph.

The tragic accident took place around 5:15 p.m. near the town of Elkton. Police officials reported that the preteen was hit by the train after his friends had already jumped over the tracks, and were on the other side. The investigation continues in order to determine the factors involved in the fatal accident.
