Daughter of “Funny Cide” Jockey Sentenced for DWI that Left One Dead

(Long Island, NY)- Sophia Santos, the 21 year-old daughter of retired hall of fame jockey, Jose Santos, was sentenced to 3-9 years in prison by a Mineola, New York Court for driving while intoxicated and killing a Long Island grandmother.

On November 11th, 2007, an intoxicated Santos ran a red light, smashing into a car occupied by the decedent, Virginia Casazza-Urgo, 63. Also in the vehicle and involved in the accident were Mrs. Urgo’s husband, John Urgo, and her sister Linda Chapman. Both suffered severe injuries, including multiple fractures. The accident took place in Levittown, New York on the Hempstead Turnpike.

Santos was charged with aggravated vehicular homicide and driving while intoxicated. She pled guilty to all charges that were filed against her.

Jose Santos, her father, was the jockey who rode on the legendary racehorse, Funny Cide.
