Simplicity Bassinets No Longer Sold By Major Retailers after Government Alerts of Dangers

New York Injury News – an alert has been announced for Simplicity Bassinets after two infant deaths were reported. Major US retailers, including Wal-Mart, announced that they would no longer be selling the affected products in their stores. Consumers who purchased the bassinets at these retailers will be offered store credit for returning them.

As a result of the two reported deaths, the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has urged consumers not to purchase or use these specific bassinets. The CPSC has also issued a warning to the recent purchaser of Simplicity Inc., SPFA Inc., with respect to its refusal to comply with the agency’s request for a voluntary recall. SPFA Inc. has stated that it is not liable for products produced before it purchased Simplicity Inc. The CPSC is asking the public to share this defective product information with others who purchased or may use Simplicity Bassinets.

The bassinets reportedly suffocated two infant children. The products were determined defective due to hazards posed by a removable cloth flap covering spacing in their metal bars. One of the infant deaths occurred last week, after the child’s head became caught between the metal bars when the flap was removed.

Recent changes provide the CPSC with the authority to issue warnings to consumers without the cooperation of the company in question, and also force recall compliance if necessary. Listed as potentially dangerous products include the Simplicity 3-in-1 and 4-in-1 Convertible Sleeper Bassinets. The CPSC website provides a full listing of models involved.
