New York City, NY (New York Injury News) — A passenger with Longs Island Rail Road claimed for his injury due to gap accidents made rail road pay a whopping compensation of more than $52 million dollars. This amount was paid for the injury claims for last year that occurred in 2007. According to a report by Thomas DiNapoli, a state Comptroller, the amount is twice more than what was paid during the last year.
In the year 2007, the gap injury accidents rose by 33% in comparison to the year 2006. According to the reports, there was a significant increase that was due to enhanced public awareness about the gap of platforms and train cars. Since the year 1995, there have been 800 accidents and ever since then, there has been a remediation campaign where it is going to spend around $46 million till 2012 for techniques on gas shrinking including the installation of metal plates, shifting of platforms and attachment of boards with the platforms so to enhance safety and security issues. According to the spokesman of railroads Joe Calderone the gap awareness was on a record time high in the year 2007 that led to increase in injury claims. However, he also added that the main priority of LIRR is the safety of employees and its customers.
According to the report made by DiNapoli, there has been an increase of claims in the year 2007 where passengers tore their clothes from the armrest car 836 M-7. According to the claims that were made for the torn clothes from the armrest from Metro-North Railroad and LIRR, the total claim was of $285,000 that includes 1400 claims in the year 2007. Over the next two years, M-7 will be installed with new armrests and the total amount that will be spent for the new armrests will be $4.7 million.
