Indictment Obtained for Contractor Charged in New York Construction Accident Death

Long Island, NY,  (NewYorkInjuryNews.com) — An indictment was recently returned for a New York contractor charged with manslaughter for the death of a construction worker killed in March in a construction accident in Brooklyn. Thirty year old father of two children, Louro Ortega was working in a construction site owned by Long Island resident, William Lattarulo, when a wall collapsed and killed him. The collapse was also reported to have left some nearby tenants homeless. Work was stopped by the city on the site after the incident, and allegations were made regarding bad working conditions and expired building permits for the site. Lattarulo has reportedly maintained his innocence in the case and does not accept blame for the death of Louro Ortega, attributing the accident to heavy rains, which he stated he made attempts to warn workers about.

New York has been stated to have had a dramatic increase in construction recently, including the development of hundreds of new high-rise buildings. With the reported boom in the state’s amount of construction, there is said to be an increase in the number of related accidents and fatalities. Sixteen construction attributed deaths have been reported this year. The number is already stated to be higher than the total reported for the year 2007. In the wake of these events, the Mayor of New York would allegedly like to have more inspections with harsher fines for those in violation of building codes, and more thorough training for workers.

New York personal injury and tort law provides provisions for those injured in construction accidents as well as wrongful death to obtain legal compensation for damage accrued. Ortega’s family attorney has been reported to be in preparation for a potential lawsuit.
