Minivan Thrown from Balboa Ferry, Sinks in Newport Harbor; 4 Rescued

Newport Harbor, CA — A collision while boarding vehicles on the Balboa Ferry Friday morning, January 13, 2012, sent a family of four in a minivan into the Newport Harbor on the Balboa Island side of the ferry run, reported NBC Los Angeles.

According to witnesses, a black Mercedes-Benz accidentally accelerated while boarding the ferry just before 9 a.m., which caused it to ram into the minivan. The impact pushed the minivan into the water, where it sank 15 feet into the harbor.

A ferry worker reportedly jumped into the water and two boaters joined in to help the four occupants of the van—two adults and two children from Taiwan—who allegedly remained calm during the entire ordeal.

All four people were rescued, with the last occupant being pulled from the van as it sunk below the water.

The collision also left the Mercedes dangling off the end of the ferry.

Police officials say they will not cite the driver of the Mercedes.
