Missoula, MT — A bus crashed on an icy southwestern Montana highway, killing two people and leaving eight others in serious or critical condition. The bus crash occurred along Interstate 90, about a mile west of Clinton, just after 7 a.m. Sunday, January 8, 2011, the Associated Press reports.

The Missoula County Sheriff’s Office reported that a 60-year-old Fatimah Amatullah of Chicago, and 56-year-old Robert Lange of Kalispell were killed when the Rimrock Trailways bus hit a patch of ice on the highway.

The Montana Highway Patrol revealed that the icy highway caused the bus to spin around and veer about 150 feet into the medium backwards, before it overturned onto its left side.

Several passengers were ejected from the bus when it slid on its side and bounced, causing several windows to shatter on the driver’s side of the bus. Four others were pinned under the bus, including the two fatally injured victims, the Associated Press said.

The two other pinned victims sustained injuries that left one person in critical condition, while the other was in serious condition. The 53-year-old bus driver is also reportedly among the seriously injured.

Responding emergency crews transported two passengers by helicopter, and six or eight others by ambulance to area hospitals for treatment of injuries. Several others, who were described as the “walking wounded,” were transported to Community Medical Center.

Police officials estimated that the bus was traveling at 65 to 70 mph at the time of the wreck.

Initial investigations revealed that the bus was traveling too fast for the conditions.

Police are continuing to investigate.
