Manatee County School Bus Slams Into Semi; 23 Injured

Bradenton, FL — A Manatee County School bus slammed into the back of a semi-truck along busy S.R. 64 and injured 23 people. The school bus crash occurred around 4:15 p.m. Thursday afternoon, January 5, 2012, just west of I-75 in front of the Wal-Mart, reports WTSP.

The Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reported that the school bus driver, 68-year-old Charles Orr, of Palmetto, failed to stop before hitting the back of the Wal-Mart tractor-trailer.

The impact was so intense that it pinned Orr’s leg, causing him to be unable to reach and apply the brakes. The school bus continued moving following the accident, as students could be seen jumping from the emergency exit door.

A witness reportedly got onto the bus and helped apply the breaks.

Twenty-three people were injured in the wreck, including 21 students from Braden River Middle School. Responding emergency crews transported the victims to three area hospitals for treatment of injuries, which may include possible broken bones.

Those who were not hurt badly were taken to the hospital via a second school bus as a precaution.

The Wal-Mart truck driver was also injured in the crash.

The FHP is investigating the school bus accident, and is expected to charge Orr with careless driving.
