Greyhound Bus, Street Sweeper Collide in Oklahoma City; 14 Injured

Oklahoma City, OK — A street sweeper and a Greyhound bus crashed on Interstate 40, injuring 15 people Wednesday morning, January 4, 2012. The bus accident occurred at I-40 and Rockwell Avenue around 12:25 a.m., reported NewsOK.

According to troopers, the Greyhound bus was traveling in the outside lane of I-40 when it attempted to switch to the inside lane, and instead collided with the street sweeper.

The bus driver claims that she did not see the street sweeper as she changed lanes.

The collision injured 14 of the 50 people aboard the bus at the time. The bus driver, Lavanda Washington, 56, of DeSoto, Texas, was also among the injured.

Washington was reportedly pinned inside the bus for 45 minutes, before being taken to the hospital in fair condition with trunk and arm injuries

Responding emergency crews transported 13 people to an Oklahoma City hospital where they were treated and released. None of the injuries were reportedly life-threatening.

One passenger, Kevin Billy, 20, of Winchester, Va., was taken to OU Medical Center for treatment of a head injury. He was also treated and released.

The bus had reportedly originated in Phoenix and was on its way to Memphis, Tenn.

Local authorities and Greyhound are investigating the bus accident.
