Eureka, CA — A worker was seriously injured after being struck from behind while doing road work Tuesday, December 27, 2011, in a construction zone. The automobile accident took place around 9:20 a.m. on Myrtle Avenue in Eureka, near Pennsylvania and Moore avenues, reports the Times-Standard.

The California Highway Patrol reported that 68-year-old Kenneth Newell of Arcata, was operating a grinder in the construction zone when a vehicle hit him from behind. The car, driven by Eugene Palmer, 17, of Eureka, apparently drove over traffic cones before slamming into Newell.

Responding emergency crews rushed Newell in critical condition to St. Joseph Hospital for treatment.

Palmer was reportedly headed southbound on Myrtle Avenue at 35 mph, when he approached the construction zone at Moore Avenue. The cones and signs then began directing southbound traffic into the left turn lane—around the construction workers who were in the intersection, the Times-Standard stated.

The CHP revealed that Palmer’s windshield had fogged up and wasn’t able to see the roadway, causing him to continue driving into the construction zone where Newell was hit.

Palmer and his passenger, Richard Higgins, 17, of Eureka was not injured in the wreck.

The Eureka Fire Department, Humboldt County Sheriff’s Office, City Ambulance and the California Highway Patrol all responded to the scene of the accident.

The vehicle accident is under investigation. Police do not believe impairment was a factor in the wreck.
