Two-Vehicle Crash in Downtown New Haven Sends Jeep into a Market; 3 Injured

New Haven, CT — A two-vehicle collision in downtown New Haven sent a Jeep careening into the side of a supermarket, injuring three people Wednesday, December 7, 2011. The automobile accident occurred around 6:15 a.m. on State Street and the Chapel Street intersection, reported WTNH.

Police reported that a pickup truck driven by Donald Allen of New Haven drove through a red light at the intersection, and hit the side of a Jeep that was traveling west on Chapel Street.

The impact of the collision sent the Jeep through a bus shelter, across the sidewalk and into the window of the Elm City Market.

The store wasn’t open to the public yet, but workers were inside. The market is on the ground floor of the new 360 State building.

The crash damaged the Jeep so badly that the passenger was trapped inside for about an hour, causing firefighters to cut away pieces of the vehicle to free the woman inside.

The woman and the driver of the Jeep, along with Allen were taken to an area hospital for treatment.

No other people were injured in the crash.

Police are investigating the automobile accident.
