Alleghany County, NC — A North Carolina high school wrestler is paralyzed from the neck down after he broke his neck at an Invitational Tournament on Saturday, December 3, 2011. The senior Alleghany High School wrestler was injured during the Jamie Tutle Invitational Wrestling Tournament at Hibriten High School in Lenior, reported WGHP.

Luke Hampton reportedly charged at his opponent with his head down, when his momentum carried him into a wall, according to a Caldwell County Schools spokesman.

The impact of running into the wall caused his neck to break in two places.

Responding EMTs rushed Hampton to Caldwell Memorial Hospital, where he was later flown to Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center for further treatment.

Hampton’s family is reportedly trying to transfer him to an Atlanta hospital specializing in spinal cord injuries.

Hampton has no feeling or movement from the chest down. His coach revealed that Hampton suffered severe spinal cord damage and is having trouble breathing on his own.

The wrestling tournament was a not a school-related event.
