Chain-Reaction 50-Vehicle Crash Killed 1, Injured 16 near Nashville

Nashville, TN — A chain-reaction collision involving 50 vehicles on a foggy stretch of Vietnam Vets Boulevard killed one person and injured 16 others early Thursday, December 1, 2011. The fatal pile-up occurred around 6:56 a.m. on a two-mile stretch of the highway, which roughly began at the bridge over Gallatin Road and ended near the Saundersville Road exit in Hendersonville, reported MSNBC.
According to reports, a small car slammed into the rear-end of a mail truck, killing one person in what police are considering four separate wrecks that occurred within a span of a few minutes.
The fatally injured victim has been identified as 28-year-old Paul Warren of Hendersonville.
Responding emergency crews transported eight people, including two children and six adults, to Sumner Regional Medical Center for treatment of non-life threatening injuries.
Eight others were taken to Hendersonville Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries. They were treated and later released.
Officials reported that most of the injuries were neck and back complaints.
One school bus was involved, but no students were injured.
Police have cited thick fog and black ice as possible factors in the chain-reaction crashes.
Investigations into the wrecks are underway.
