CalTrans Worker Severs Arm While Clearing Brush in Fallbrook

San Diego County, CA — A work-related accident caused a CalTrans worker’s arm to be severed at his shoulder on Thursday, November 17, 2011. The worker was clearing brush in Fallbrook around 1 p.m. on Highway 76 near Gird Road, just two miles west of I-15, reported NBC San Diego.

According to officials, Jason Giessow’s arm was severed when a loose cable got caught in the machinery he was using to clear the brush from the road. The machine’s rotors move at about 10,000 rpm, when the cable snapped through and went across Giessow’s arm.

His arm was thrown into the air and found about 50 yards away from where the accident took place.

Responding emergency crews rushed him to Palomar Hospital, and his arm was transported via helicopter about 20 minutes later when it was located by San Diego County Search and Rescue.

Doctors only had about a three-hour window to reattach his arm. It is unknown at this time if they were successful at reattaching his arm.

The state’s Department of Industrial Relations is investigating the work-related accident.
