Key West, FL — In the wake of a fatal speed boating accident at Key West Superboat World Championships on Wednesday, two more people were left with injuries and another was killed in two separate crashes later in the week. The three fatalities has marked offshore powerboat racing’s deadliest week in memory, reported the Miami Herald.

According to reports, Warpaint owner/driver Bob Vesper of Somers Point, N.J., and throttleman Danny Crank of Hammonton were injured when their 38-foot boat with twin 750-horsepower engines hit a wave during the final race on Sunday, November 13, 2011.

Responding emergency crews rushed Vesper to Lower Keys Medical Center, while Crank was taken to Miami’s Jackson Memorial Hospital for treatment of a torn ear and a possible concussion.

On Friday, November 11, tragedy struck again when Page Motorsports throttleman Joey Gratton, of University Park, was killed when his 28-foot Skater with twin 850-horsepower engine rolled near an offshore turn. Gratton was taken to Jackson Memorial Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries early Saturday.

Page owner/driver Stephen Page of Fort Myers also suffered minor injuries and was taken to Lower Keys Medical Center, where he was treated and released.

On Wednesday, Big Thunder Marine owner/throttleman Bob Morgan and driver Jeffrey Tillman, both of Missouri, were killed when their 46-foot catamaran with four 1,200-horsepower engines went airborne and landed upside down during the race opener.
