Girl, 9, Dies in Fiery Crash on 101 Freeway; Mother Seriously Burned

Calabasas, CA —A fiery crash on the 101 Freeway burned a 9-year-old girl to death and left her mother with severe burns Saturday morning, October 1, 2011. The fatal automobile accident occurred around 8:30 a.m. in the eastbound lands of the highway near Las Virgenes Road, reported KTLA.
According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), a 1996 Chrysler Sedan driven by 27-year-old Gilani Taylor, was traveling east on the highway when she lost control of her vehicle for unknown reasons.
The out-of-control car slammed into the center divider, before continuing to spin uncontrollably and hit a tanker, which was hauling liquid nitrogen. The impact caused the vehicle to rollover and slide about 20 feet on its roof before it came to a rest and burst into flames.
The fire was so intense that it reportedly engulfed the vehicle within seconds.
Taylor managed to crawl out of the burning car, but her daughter, 9-year-old Jayla Taylor, wasn’t so lucky. Jayla wasn’t able to get out and died in the crash.
Responding emergency crews airlifted Gilani to UCLA Medical Center for treatment of her burn injuries, which affected 90 percent of her body. She was later transferred to USC Medical Center’s burn unit.
The tank sustained minimal damage in the wreck, and no other vehicles were involved.
A full investigation into the deadly crash and what caused Gilani to lose control is underway.
