Indianapolis, IN– A 90-foot crane toppled over and destroyed the roof of a historic building in Rathskeller’s beer complex, which also injured three construction workers. The crane fell over onto the Athenaeum complex, located at 401 East Michigan Street, around 9:45 a.m., on Monday, August 23, 2010, as reported by WTHR.

The crane operator and two construction workers were completing some restoration work, and loading chimney bricks into the crane buckets when the 60,000-lb. crane began to fall over.

Capt. Rita Burris, IFD said, “He laid the bucket on the roof so as not to injure the guys removing the bricks when the crane started to tip. They’re unsure why, whether the ground grave way or the outrigger, but it did a full flip over.”

The boom of the crane subsequently sliced through the roof of the Rathskeller. The operator of the crane, who is also a 15-year employee of RH Marlin, rode the falling crane down before jumping off. The crane operator was transported to an area hospital for injuries he acquired in the accident. Two other construction workers were transported to Methodist Hospital to be evaluated as a precaution.

The three stories of the Rathskeller were heavily damaged, which included water damage. The Rathskeller, Athenaeum and YMCA buildings were affected by the accident.

Officials with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are investigating the construction accident.
