Theodore, AL—An ammonia leak at an Alabama plant sickened over 120 people, which also landed four people in the intensive care unit. The leak was reported at 9:25 a.m., on Monday, August 23, 2010 at Millard Refrigerated Services, as reported by USA Today.

Authorities reported that between 400 gallons and 800 gallons of ammonia leaked at the plant, which is located near the area where BP PLC workers have been helping to clean up the oil spill. Many BP workers were among those who were sickened by the ammonia fumes.

Health officials in Mobile said that at least 29 people have been admitted to the hospital, and four people are currently in intensive care. Majority of the victims complained of minor breathing problems, scratchy throats or dizziness.

Officials stated that 100 people have been treated, which included at least 50 people being transported by ambulance and others transported by private vehicles.

Area residents were alerted of the spill, and were advised to stay inside and shut off their air conditioners.

Plant workers managed to contain and stop the leak. It is not currently known what caused the leak.
