Farrell Pennsylvania environmental news: Oil-water mix spills during transfer

Farrell, PA – Approximately 13,000 gallons of an oil-water mixture spilled into the Shenango River during an overnight transfer from Tuesday, August 10, 2010 until Wednesday morning, according to The Pittsburgh Channel. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection and the state Fish and Boat Commission were at the scene of Duferco Farrell Corp., where the spill happened.

The area’s local television station, Channel 4 Action, reported that several oil booms were setup in the water downstream to catch any remnants of the spill. When the oil pools against the booms, workers will put a vacuum into the river to suck the pollution up.

A Pennsylvania DEP spokesperson, Freda Tarbell, reported the spill happened after workers from Duferco Farrell Corp. attempted to transfer oil from one storage tank to a second.

The president of human resources with the firm said, “In the morning, when they came in, they looked at the storage tank and it should be at a higher level and it was not, so that automatically brought up a red flag…They ascertain that the materials – instead of going to the storage tank was in our drainage system that was being pumped into the river. Obviously we corrected the situation immediately.”

The company has enlisted the aid of McCutcheon Enterprises to clean the spill.

The DEP recorded it had not received reports of fish kills.
