Chicago, IL—A worker was crushed to death at Berlin Industries in Carol Stream early Saturday morning, June 26, 2010. Carol Stream Fire Protection District officials were called to the scene at 175 Mercedes Drive at 5 a.m., as reported by mysuburbanlife.com.

As rescue teams were on their way to the scene, they were alerted that a worker was crushed by a large amount of paper, prompting officials to call for additional fire and rescue units. About 25 fire personnel responded to the scene.

When rescue teams arrived, they found the worker partially trapped under a significant load of paper, which could not be removed because of the compactness and weight of the paper. Emergency medical technicians (EMT) examined the portion of the worker’s body that was under the paper and determined he was non-responsive, and had no vital signs.

At 5:15 a.m. the unidentified worker was pronounced dead. It wasn’t until 7 a.m., that firefighters were able to remove the worker from underneath the paper.

A full investigation into the workplace accident is currently underway. Officials with the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are expected to conduct a full investigation.

Firefighters and command staff from Hanover Park, Wheaton fire departments and Bloomingdale Fire Protection District also responded to the scene.
