Manitowoc, WI—An explosion at a Manitowoc County feed mill injured a man Tuesday night, June 1, 2010. The explosion occurred at CP Feeds on Washington Street in Valders around 7:15 p.m., as reported by Fox 11.

Keith Petersen, Valders 2nd Assistant Fire Chief reported, a maintenance worker “had either a halogen or treble light in the grain bin. He was pounding on the grain bin and the feed let loose. When the feed let loose, it hit his light, which shattered his light and ignited the dust, causing an explosion.”

Fire fighters stated that a total of three bins at the feed mill exploded, and part of the structure was blown out.

The explosion injured the maintenance worker. He was rushed by responding emergency crews to an area hospital where she was treated for undisclosed injuries. The worker was later released from the hospital. His injuries were described as “minor.”

Two responding fire fighters were also taken to the hospital for dehydration.

The building reportedly sustained major damage, which is estimated to be between $500,000 and $1 million.

Officials with the U.S. Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) are expected to conduct an investigation into the blast.

Firefighters from Manitowoc, Collins, St. Nazianz and Whitelaw also responded to the blast.
