North Carolina personal injury attorney alerts- NCSHP to probe fatal freak accident involving SUV.
Davie County, NC—A freak accident resulted in the death of the chief Virginia Department of Forestry (VDOF) technician on Friday, March 12, 2010. The incident, in which an aluminum disc smashed through the windshield of the victims sport utility vehicle, occurred on Interstate 40 in Davie County, North Carolina, according to information provided by GoDanRiver.com.
Authorities from the North Carolina State Highway Patrol (NCSHP) reported a westbound SUV, driven by 59-year-old Alton, Virginia resident William Alexander Williamson, traveling in the right hand lane of I-40 when an aluminum disc crashed through the windshield. The disc was approximately three feet in diameter and struck Williamson in the head, consequently knocking him unconscious and then landing in the back seat of the vehicle. Martha, William’s sister in law, was riding in the front passenger seat of the vehicle at the time. Reports stated she repeatedly and desperately tried to stop the vehicle with Williamson in the drivers seat, only succeeding in doing so four to five miles away from the initial point of impact with the disc. The SUV was allegedly traveling at speeds of around 70 miles per hour at the time.
Iredell County emergency medical services (EMS) personnel responded to the scene after Williamson’s wife, Betty, seemingly called 911 to report the horrifying incident. Williamson was transported to Davis Regional Medical Center and then transferred to Wake Forest University Baptist Hospital, where his severe injuries eventually proved fatal. Martha, Betty and another unidentified passenger apparently suffered undisclosed injuries in the wreck as well.
Based on the scuff marks left of the mysterious disc, NCSHP officials allegedly believed it was on the road prior to the incident. Officials from the State Highway Patrol and the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) are probing the incident as a means of finding out why the disc was in the roadway to begin with.
