Arizona Department of Public Safety is investigating a bus crash that left six people dead and 16 injured near Phoenix.

Phoenix, AZ– A charter bus was involved in a violent and fatal crash, when it slammed into the back of a pickup truck on Friday, March 5, 2010, which left six people dead and 16 others with injuries. The charter bus rolled over on Interstate 10, about 30 miles south of Phoenix around 5:30 a.m., as reported by AZCentral.com.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety reported that the charter-style passenger bus was traveling in the right lane of I-10 when it somehow slammed into the rear of a Ford F-150, which then caused the bus to swerve across all lanes of traffic, and overturn before coming to a stop in the upright position. As the bus was rolling, several passengers were ejected from the vehicle. A total of six people out of 23 passengers were tragically killed in the wreck, which consisted of two men and four women. One passenger is believed to be missing, but investigators think the passenger could be stuck underneath the bus as it rolled over into the ditch. Eleven people were rushed by ambulance to several area hospitals for treatment. Five victims sustained serious enough injuries to be flown by a medical helicopter to a hospital for medical attention. The driver of the bus sustained serious injuries and was taken to the Maricopa Medical Center.

Two more vehicles, a pickup truck and an Infiniti, were also involved in the wreck. The Infiniti slammed into the back of truck as a result of the bus crash, which sent a passenger of the Infiniti to the hospital.

The Tierra Santa Tours Inc. bus was on its way to Los Angeles, from Zacatecas, Mexico when the crash occurred. Police investigators are currently investigating the crash.
