Albuquerque, NM—Federal and state investigators were at the scene of a tank explosion and fire at a southeastern New Mexico oil refinery, where two men were killed and two others were seriously injured. The warning sirens sounded around 1:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 1, 2010, at the Navajo Refinery located at the intersection of U.S. 82 and U.S. 285 in Artesia, as reported by KGBT 4.

It was not revealed what caused the storage tank explosion and fire that left two workers dead and two others injured. One body was found at the refinery, and the other man is currently missing and investigators have presumed him dead. The deceased workers have been identified as Natividad Andajo, of Odessa, Texas, and Victor Villa of Midland, Texas. The two injured workers, whose identities haven’t been released, were airlifted to a hospital in Lubbock, Texas for treatment of their injuries. Northwest Insulation of Texas, who was a contractor at the refinery, reportedly employed all four workers. The federal U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) http://www.osha.gov/ and the state Environment Department’s Occupational Safety and Health Bureau are currently conducting investigations at the scene.

The plant reportedly refines oil into diesel, gasoline, jet fuel, asphalt, and other product 24-hours a day.
