Tennessee personal injury attorney alerts- Knoxville Police Department officials investigate traffic accident in which a pedestrian was struck by a trolley bus.

Knoxville, TN (News)—A Knox Area Transit (KAT) trolley struck a homeless man on Monday, March 1, 2010, fatally injuring him. The unfortunate traffic accident occurred at approximately 7:30 a.m. at the intersection of Summit Hill and Gay Street, according to information provided by WBIR.com.

Preliminary investigations conducted by officials from the Knoxville Police Department suggested a pedestrian, with the intention of traveling north, was standing on the median between the eastbound and westbound lanes of Summit Hill when he seemingly attempted to cross the road. Simultaneously, a trolley, driven by 48-year-old Anthony Bishop, that was initially traveling north on Summit Hill turned onto westbound Gay Street, striking the pedestrian.

Emergency medical services (EMS) crews seemingly responded to the scene to transport the injured male pedestrian, identified as 49-year-old Perry Richard Henley, to UT Medical Center in Memphis, Tennessee, to be treated by doctors and nurses. However, the pedestrian’s severe injuries allegedly proved fatal at the medical center. Charges are pending the completion of accident investigations.

According to the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), created by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) http://www.nhtsa.gov, more than 162,000 pedestrians were fatally injured in single-vehicle traffic collisions between 1975 and 2001. Reports also stated that males made up approximately 68 percent of the total reported pedestrian casualties in 2001.
