DPD officials are investigating a fatal collision involving a DDOT bus and a pedestrian.
Detroit, MI (News)—An unfortunate pedestrian-involved traffic crash left a deaf woman fatally injured on Tuesday morning, March 2, 2010. The vehicle involved in the fatal collision was a Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT) bus, according to information provided by the Detroit Free Press.
Authorities from the Detroit Police Department (DPD) reported, “a city worker test-driving a bus for safety” struck a woman as she was crossing the road at 6:30 a.m. Reports stated the woman, identified as 49-year-old Ethel Davis, was hit by the DDOT bus at the junction of Livernois and Courtland. Davis, known around the neighborhood as “Miss Jazz”, seemingly suffered injuries, which proved fatal at the scene of the incident.
As a means of evaluating safety, an unidentified 52-year-old mechanic was test-driving the bus at the time. It was not known how the accident occurred or if any specific factors contributed to the accident. A witness, who works at the gas station nearby and knew Davis as regular customer, allegedly noted that she was hit nearly 200 yards away from a crosswalk, subsequently stating, “Most people take chances and dart out into the street.” Officials from the Detroit Police Department’s Fatal Squad are investigating the tragic traffic accident.
