North Carolina criminal attorney alerts- Mother arrested on murder charges in regards to a blaze that left two of her children with fatal injuries.
Charlotte, NC (News)—A mother faces charges in connection with the death of two of her children, who were left unsupervised when their house burst into flames on Sunday morning, February 28, 2010. Reports state this tragic incident was not the first time the mother has neglected her children, citing previous charges from an October 27, 2009 incident, according to information provided by MSNBC as well as the Charlotte Observer.
Authorities from the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department allegedly stated a residential blaze was ignited while four children were inside a home without any adult supervision. The kids, whose ages were reported to be one, two, four, and seven, were unfortunately not all lucky enough to survive the incident. A neighbor was allegedly able to rescue the 4-year-old as well as the 7-year-old, though two infants, identified as 1-year-old Gabriel Hawthorne and 2-year-old Josiah Hawthorne, were not so fortunate and suffered fatal injuries in the inferno. Fire department officials reportedly believed a kerosene heater accidentally ignited the deadly house fire.
After police officials allegedly spent hours looking for the mother of the four children, 26-year-old Orgal Paulette Opata was arrested in connection with the blaze. Opata reportedly faces charges including “two counts of murder and three counts of reckless/gross felony child abuse”. It was not disclosed whether or not Opata already has an attorney to defend her in court.
