Clinton, NC (News)—An accident at an under-construction church in Sampson County, North Carolina, left one worker dead and two others injured on Thursday, February 17, 2010. The fatal construction accident reportedly occurred at Mount Vernon Baptist Church, located on Faison Highway, according to information provided by ABC11.

Construction workers were allegedly working at the church site when the roof supports seemingly gave way, causing the roof to collapse. An employee working at the scene reportedly stated, “We [were] taking some of the 2×4s out and putting in new ones. Every time we took it out, we heard this sound, then suddenly boom! Half the structure came down.” One construction worker, whose identity was undisclosed pending family notification, sustained severe injuries that proved fatal at the scene.

Emergency medical services (EMS) crews seemingly responded to the scene to airlift two other workers to Chapel Hill via medical helicopter to be treated by doctors and nurses. The unidentified workers allegedly suffered injuries after becoming temporarily trapped under debris from the roof collapse. The extents of the workers’ injuries were undisclosed by authorities. Wind may have been a factor in the incident. Officials from the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) and the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are expected to conduct a formal investigation into the incident.
