Fatal Starkville Mississippi apartment blaze claimed the lives of nine people.

Starkville, MS—A Starkville, Mississippi apartment fire tragically killed nine people, six of them children, on Monday morning, December 28, 2009, according to information provided by the Clarion Ledger. The inferno at Academy Crossing Apartments on Old Mississippi 25 was allegedly reported to fire rescue officials at 4:36 a.m.

It was reported that the fire was started in one of the four upstairs units of the two-story apartment complex. Thirteen firemen, as well as one pumper, were dispatched to fight the apartment fire with two ladder trucks. Fire fighters reportedly had the blaze under control within approximately 15 minutes.

A Starkville Fire Department Chief who had been working with the department for 28 years allegedly claimed that he didn’t think there was ever a worse fire in regards to the number of fatalities. Those fatally injured in the blaze included four males whose ages were listed as 2-years-old, 4-years-old, 5-years-old, and 6-years-old, as well as five females whose ages were 4-months-old, 5-years-old, two 19-year-olds, and a 25-year-old. The victims of the fire have not-yet been formally identified. Officials allegedly reported that the apartment in which the fire took place belonged to a family that was having another family visit at the time of the blaze.

The cause of the fatal inferno is currently unknown but investigations continue.
