Occupational Health and Safety Administration fined Universal Orlando for safety violations after Dueling Dragons roller coaster accident.
Orlando, FL—The U.S. Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) http://www.osha.gov/ slapped Universal Orlando with a hefty fine due to an accident this summer. On July 1, 2009, an employee was injured when he was hit by the Dueling Dragons roller coaster, which OSHA deemed a “serious” safety violation, as reported by the Orlando Sentinel.
Universal was issued a $3,750 fine for the roller coaster accident, because OSHA investigators claimed employees at Universal were in hazardous situations when they performed maintenance and foundation checks underneath the roller coaster, known as “The Compound.” Universal workers apparently are in harms way while in “The Compound” because the workers regularly walk under the path of the coaster tracks. The Dueling Dragons roller coaster is located in the Islands of Adventure theme park and is slated to become a part of the new Wizarding World of Harry Potter. The original fine issued to Universal was $5,000, but was later reduced due to settlement negotiations. Universal agreed to implement more fencing in the compound area, where the risk of being hit by the coaster is high. All new safety installations must be completed by December 24th.
